A background that starts in nature

I grew up in the Willow Glen area of San Jose where overhanging walnut trees lined the streets and the green hills dotted the horizon to the east in spring. I was very outdoorsy. My mother tried very hard to get me involved in different things from 4H to Blue Birds. I was extremely shy and my refuge was to climb trees or hide in the neighbor’s yard which I imagined to be the Amazon rainforest.

My first camera was a Kodak 110 film camera. Subsequently I was given a small Nikon point and shoot for a birthday and thereafter my father said if I took some photo classes in college he would give me his Pentax spotmatic.

I began to study photography while going towards my degree in pediatric nursing at DeAnza college in Cupertino. My love was black and white film photography and I learned to develop and print film. I rented medium format cameras and went on to own a few such as Pentax, Bronica, Mamiya and Rollei. I learned a bit of early video skills with my father’s Super 8 camera.
I never did finish my nursing degree but ended up having my first child at age 20. I continued photography work and attended Mission College in Santa Clara for web and graphic design while also working for a software company in Los Gatos.
I moved onto digital photography about 2002 at which time I was living and working for Intel, Folsom, CA. Intermittently I was shooting weddings on the weekends but my true love was being in nature.

My adventures took me to Montana, Idaho, Utah, and Nevada which is my current home. I don’t have a favorite brand of camera – having owned everything from Olympus to Nikon to Canon…(except Leica). I’ll probably stick with Sony for now since I am most familiar with the system. I love trying different cameras and technologies however.

Nevada is a unique state geographically speaking. I’ve lived on almost every side of it from the base of the Ruby Mountains to the California border and many rural towns in between.

I continue to explore Nevada and am usually never without a camera. My current endeavors are shooting video but I continue a passion of stationary images especially black and white.

I encourage everyone to get out and hike, walk or explore Nevada. You never know what you might find. Follow me on Bluesky, Youtube and this website for continuing information.
